The 1st ODI of the series turned out to be a rather tame affair with India winning the match in Guwahati quite easily. Virat Kohli scored a match winning hundred, and New Zealand were never really in the chase though the final scoreline might suggest otherwise. It was only thanks to some good partnerships at the end that New Zealand managed to reach where they finally did.

But India will need to sort out a few things too. A late burst from Andy McKay meant that India folded much sooner than they should have. India lost its last few wickets too soon for comfort. A score of 271 was less than what they what they would have bargained for in the middle of the innings.

New Zealand can also take heart from the fact that they were playing without their experienced captain Daniel Vettori. A sore back kept him out of the 1st ODI, but he should hopefully be back for the more important 2nd ODI tomorrow.

Tendulkar has just completed his 42nd test hundred as India have taken full control of the 1st Test at Hamilton. Captain MS Dhoni is giving the Little Master company as India are well placed at 340/5 - already 61 runs ahead and looking good for a 200 runs lead. Now that will be too much for New Zealand to handle, won’t it?

Twin losses in the Twenty20 Series have put India on the backfoot at the very start of their tour to NewZealand. Lack of practise before the tour began has definitely hampered India’s chances, especially the batting. India had a strong batting line-up for the Twenty20 format but the way they were exposed was demoralising.

Now the second leg of the tour begins - the inaugural one day match of the series is slated for tomorrow at the Mc Lean Park in Napier. India’s batsmen should fancy better prospects in the one day series as the fifty over format of cricket gives batsmen a chance to get settled in before they need to play their strokes, unlike in T20 where you have to go bang-bang as soon as the match goes live.  Sachin Tendulkar will join the team for the ODIs and that should provide the batting with much needed solidity.

Ishant Sharma may not make it to the XI tomorrow as he is injured.

The series is commencing with a Twenty20 match at Christchurch on Wednesday, 25th February 2009.  This will be India’s first ever T20 match in New Zealand, and will be the first test for India on this tour where they won’t have any chance of gaining any match practise before this match.

India are the current world Twenty20 Champions and New Zealand are a tough nut to crack at home. In tests, India may have a much superior side, but in Twenty20 matches it doesn’t mattter so much and what matters is how you perform in those 4o overs. One or two outstanding performances can often change the course of a match, and matches often turn on their head in a matter of an over or two.

That’s what makes Twenty20 cricket so exciting and therefore the great viewer interest. So you wouldn’t want to miss watching the match live.
